Every one of us has been touched by the terrible events at the Boston Marathon and even there we can find lessons for leaders. It doesn’t take tragedy to call on us for something deeper, something extraordinary. It may only take significant challenge and every one of us faces that sooner or later.
So just for a moment set aside politics, opinions and strongly held beliefs and watch this Wall Street Journal compilation of President Obama’s comments at the Boston Interfaith Memorial Service on April 18, 2013. Watch this not just as an American, but also as a learner to see the leadership delivered to a nation in a time of challenge and suffering. Listen for the messages of hope at a time of little hope, of caring at a time when caring was needed, of community, of our determination for right to triumph over wrong, of resilience and courage and of belief in ourselves and the future. It is what we needed to hear.
Recognize that in challenging times, people need their leaders to show up in ways that help them to find the strength to carry on and do what must be done. You agreed to do that when you became leader. That’s why Fully Alive Leadership Practice #9 is: Be Their Confident Captain.
