Facilitation

Recently, I did a facilitation and training for an entire company. They’re poised for dramatic growth and needed both focusing and a vehicle to bring all the voices into the conversation, so that’s where I guided the session.

We began with the CEO declaring the vision of the organization. It’s quite a good statement, as it’s clear, it’s actionable and it’s inspirational. Then we talked about the mission of the organization and finally the goals for the next few years. The last part of that section of facilitation was to challenge thinking and poke at what will need to happen if the goals are to be met. That’s when the magic happened.

Everyone pitched in. Everyone offered their two cents, their thoughtful replies, their good attitude. All the voices contributed and that is what will be required on a continuing basis if they’re to achieve their lofty dreams. Now they know how to do that.

The reasons for telling you this are twofold. First, a critical piece of great leadership is to plumb the depths of wisdom, creativity and critical thinking of everyone in your shop. That’s how you consistently find the best answers and the craftiest solutions. This is connected to Fully Alive Leadership Practice Number 2: Ask Great Questions.

The second reason is to offer the obvious, that sometimes an outside facilitator can make all the difference in drawing out those best answers and craftiest solutions.
