Frequent business travel offers many opportunities to learn.
For example, I saw a guy wearing this T-shirt at O’Hare Airport last week. It pretty well defines the attitude held by lots of people toward others with views that differ from their own. It betrays an absence of open-mindedness, the lack of an eagerness to learn, and suggests a complete lack of tolerance to change and even to creativity.
For leaders, that doesn’t work well unless the goals are dispirited followers and sub-optimal results.
So, do a gut check. How open are you to the thoughts and ideas of others when those thoughts and ideas don’t comport perfectly with your own? Keep in mind that if all progress is dependent on your thinking alone, you’ll be severely limited in what you can accomplish.
As my pal Ozzie Gontang is fond of saying, “None of us is as smart as all of us.” To that I’ll add, “Be open to it.”
