Dan Yinger was an attendee at a Fully Alive Leadership workshop recently, and he spoke with great wisdom in just a few words that stunned the rest of us.
At the time we were focusing on the issue of respect. Since the leader-follower dynamic is all about relationship, the human parts that either inspire us or dispirit us, feeling respect from the other person is critical. It takes time to demonstrate our respect to the point that others feel comfortable that it’s real. Sadly, it only takes a moment to destroy that feeling of respect with a dismissive word, a lack of appreciation or simply by forgetting others.
That’s when Dan spoke up. He said,
“Respect and trust are like virginity. When it’s gone, it’s gone.”
So, be mindful of how you show up with those who look to you for leadership. They want your respect – they need your respect – and all it takes is your being mindful and demonstrating your respect for them.
