This is the time of year when it’s common to be presented with the year-in-retrospect or yet another instruction to plan for a better new year or even a piece of philosophical perspective. Not gonna do it.
What I am going to do is to make the point that your leadership drives others’ followership. You becoming an ever-better leader is the key to a brighter future. How will you do that? Who you gonna call? Well, I don’t think I can make this complicated, because it’s simpler than you might think.
It’s all about relationship.
That’s it. The primary driver. It’s about how you “be” with those who look to you for leadership. Don’t think for a minute that this means that you have to be the king or queen of warm and fuzzy. That’s just about style. I’m talking about substance. Do relationship in your own style of leadership, but get that your people respond to how you show up with them and whether you care about them. If you don’t or if it looks like you don’t, your leadership is sunk. Guaranteed sub-optimal results. But if your people get the message that you care, you can count on this for you and every one of your people:
More of what you want and less of what you don’t want.
Go ahead – give it a try by really listening, for example, when someone is talking to you, seeking only to understand. Try letting go of controlling people, because everyone hates being micro-managed. Become an even better question-asker.
That’s right: It’s about the Fully Alive Leadership Practices. They’re fleshed out in my new book, ENGAGEMENT: How Great Leaders Ignite A-Game Performance. They’re in your workbook from a Fully Alive Leadership keynote or workshop.
That is to say, you have the tools. Now is the time to put them to work.
