Shut Down

Reading time – 19 seconds

I recently delivered a program to a group of top executives in Atlanta, just as a major snowstorm was starting to pummel the east coast.  The weather guessers projected that somewhere between 8 and 12 inches of snow would blanket DC, so government offices were shut down to avoid traffic problems in the afternoon.  During an informal discussion after my presentation, one of the executives said, “Government offices were shut down?  How can you tell?”

We all got a chuckle out of his humor, but it made me wonder in yet another way about leadership.  Can your people tell when you’re not fully present – when you’ve shut down relative to them?  The answer, of course, is yes.  They recognize immediately if your mind is elsewhere and it is as frustrating to them as it is to all of us that government seems to have shut down, snowstorm or not.

You can be better than government.  You can show up – fully – every day.  You can be fully present for your people.  It will make all the difference for them and for your results.  In fact, you’ll probably,

Get more of what you want and less of what you don’t want!
