Where is True North for you?  What is your vision for your business?  How about your vision for your non-business life?  You do have a non-business life, right?  If not, call me immediately.

Back to True North: You need to be clear about it, that unchanging, guiding star that gives you direction so that you make decisions that consistently make sense and move you in the right direction.

Just as important, those who look to you for leadership can only do their very best work – give their A-game – when they know which way to go and it’s your job to tell them.  That means that you not only need to be clear about True North, but you also have to be able to articulate it in just a few words.  Those pearls of prose about company vision that are hung in the beautiful frame that adorns the wall of your entryway are lovely – and nobody knows what they say.

If people are to be clear about True North, the message needs to be articulated in just a few words and repeated often.  Then you’ll be giving those who look to you for leadership a fighting chance to help you get to True North.  It’s your clarity that allows them to give you their A-game.
